Creativity is not a natural state for an adult. In fact, our brains would love to avoid to it. It represents a vulnerability we long ago learned to avoid.

Modern life is increasing void of boredom. There’s always a device or a task to occupy our time. Even waiting in a line can now be an opportunity for entertainment through our phones. We seem more afraid than ever to be contemplative.

This is not the lament of a luddite. This is an opportunity for artists.

The BBC recently published an article about the effects of [boredom on creativity](http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-21895704?ref=cjchilvers.com). It was targeted at parents, but really applies to anyone.

> “Dr Teresa Belton told the BBC cultural expectations that children should be constantly active could hamper the development of their imagination.”

> \[Artist Grayson\] “Perry said boredom was also beneficial for adults: ‘As I get older, I appreciate reflection and boredom. Boredom is a very creative state.’”

Your brain requires external forces to get out of safe mode. Sometimes constraints are enough, but boredom may be an equally useful tool.
